Your contribution
This role is part of the Koala Operations Unit within the Wildlife and Threatened Species Operations Branch. Working in the Daisy Hill Koala Centre (the centre) team, this role will carry out a range of tasks to support the day to day operations of the centre including koala husbandry, community engagement, facilities maintenance and administrative tasks. This role will also contribute to the delivery of projects supporting the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2020- 2025.
The Wildlife Officer role advertised is part of the Southern Wildlife and Koala Operations team. The team operates in South-East Queensland to deliver services to conserve and protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat, with particular focus on:

  • regulation of the Nature Conservation Act to deliver protected wildlife compliance and enforcement
  • providing safe interaction between people and wildlife
  • working with the community to build positive interactions between community and wildlife
  • applied research to assist in the development of innovative wildlife management strategies
This role's focus area is community engagement, awareness, and education of the public regarding koala conservation initiatives. The centre plays a valuable part in the delivery of these key goals of the South-East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy.
This position will also require the successful applicant to be physically able to complete koala husbandry activities in sometimes demanding environmental conditions, including the harvesting of fodder and maintenance of fodder plantations.
Your role

As the Wildlife Officer, WOO3 you will:
  • Operate individually and as an effective member of the team.
  • Directly interact with wildlife, including the safe capture, handling and husbandry, in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Undertake field monitoring and associated activities (e.g., flying-fox roost monitoring andkoala population survey).
  • Provide information to community groups, industry and the general public about wildlife management.
  • Under the direction of senior staff, investigate complaints including auditing compliance and enforcement activities relating to the take, use and keep of wildlife under relevant and other breaches of legislation.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
